It’s arrived! “Parker” is here… and by “Parker” I mean the name given to the new WordPress 3.8 release.
“Parker” was being “conceived” over the course of the last several months and was born on December 12th, 2013.
Okay, enough with the stupid birth analogy.
Well, WordPress has an affinity for Jazz (all WordPress updates are names after Jazz legends), and 3.8 was named “Parker” in honor of Charlie Parker, American jazz saxophonist, composer and all-around bebop innovator.
A New Era for WordPress?
This release was led by Matt Mullenweg. This is our second release using the new plugin-first development process, with a much shorter time-frame than in the past. We think it’s been going great. You can check out the features currently in production on the make/core blog.
A New Modern Design
3.8, in my opinion, has a really “slick” new modern look. The admin dashboard is completely revamped and much more vibrant. That somewhat dull and unappealing grey tone is no more. This new vibrant look can be attributed to MP6, which is a plugin put together by core developers at WordPress to split out the admin UI.
WordPress just got a colorful new update. We’ve included eight new admin color schemes so you can pick the one that suits you best.
These color schemes can be changed through your Profile page.
WordPress 3.8 is Responsive and Fast
The dashboard is responsive so no matter what device you are using (phone, tablet, notebook, etc), it will adapt.
Additionally, “Parker” is using vector-based icons that will scale to your screen. Matt and company touted this feature as it should significantly increase page load speed.
A Better Widget Experience.
One of the areas of focus for “Parker” was widgets. The widget screen has a new design aimed to improve the management of widgets.
Have a large monitor? Multiple widget areas stack side-by-side to use the available space. Using a tablet? Just tap a widget to add it.
Get Your Sneak Peak at Twenty Fourteen
The admin system wasn’t the sole focus of this release. WordPress 3.8 also introduces the Twenty Fourteen Theme. Check out the demo of Twenty Fourteen Fully responsive? Yep. Twenty fourteen is “mobile-friendly”.
175 people contributed to “Parker” and here they are:
